When I first got sober, I was told that sobriety isn’t for people who want it, it’s for people who DO IT. We put our real effort towards things we value.

For years, my battle with sobriety was a series of failures, not because I lacked the desire, but because I didn’t value it enough. The idea of sobriety was enticing, yet the challenging path to achieving it always overshadowed the dream. When I valued sobriety, that’s when my effort followed, and in full force.

Most hard things in life can share this same pattern. You want something so bad, but you don’t value it enough to put in real effort. This can be for your fitness, your relationships, your dreams. You can fantasize about them all you want, but until it becomes something you value, it won’t happen.

The Lure of the Easy Path

People often gravitate towards the easier, softer way in life. It’s a natural thing to find the easiest route. However, this approach leads us away from what we truly desire. The things we yearn for most lie beyond comfort and ease. Truly worthwhile things take work.

Being Honest With Yourself

Another example of something I wanted in life was good relationships. For years, I yearned for a healthy romantic relationship. Yet, my actions painted a different picture. It wasn’t until I was brutally honest with myself, acknowledging that I didn’t value it enough, that I decided to make radical changes. Being honest with yourself can lead to the biggest transformations in your life.

Health and Fitness: Commit to Get What You Value

In health and fitness, once you’re honest with yourself about the amount of value you’re putting on your health, you can recommit to your truest goals. If you don’t currently value your goals enough to go after them, it’s not the end. It’s a starting point. You can choose today to redetermine what you value. Explore the reasons causing a gap between your wants and what you value and get busy.

In the end, YOU choose what’s important. YOU can get yourself to act. Whether it’s sobriety, fitness, or any other goal, success is waiting for those who DO IT, not for those who just want it. YOU get to decide to move from passive desire to active commitment. YOU can prioritize what you value, and achieve your deepest dreams.
